KITCHEN WITH A VIEW | GREENSLADE_SECTION_04.16.2019_RGB_3.jpg

We were tasked with creating a larger kitchen, relocating the dining room and laundry room, and creating an entrance, without direct living room contact, to the house’s east side from an unattached garage.

Our design solution transforms the existing trussed roof assembly over the social spaces into a large vaulted space supported by a post and ridge beam system.

Locating a new laundry room and mudroom addition behind the garage in conjunction with the posts and beam in lieu of walls maximizes views from the interior to Mount Hood.

The post and beam system allows for installing new roof rafters with high-performance insulation and keeping the existing roof covering, plywood roof diaphragm, and truss top chord in place. A new finished wood ceiling is attached to the vaulted rafters and becomes a primary design element.

A sliding door recessed into a thickened exterior wall frame a view for diners while the wall’s thickness is utilized for wine storage.
